Jewelry Care Guide: How to Take Care of Your Jewelry

ERIJEWELRY creates jewelry made of high-quality and long-lasting materials. We understand the importance of long-lasting, durable jewelry, which is why our jewelry is designed to last for years to come.

When we wear jewelry, our jewelry becomes a part of ourselves. Not only do the pieces of jewelry we wear come in close contact with our bodies, but they also come in close contact with the environment (salt/chlorinated water, harsh substances, detergents, chemicals, dirt, etc.). The more you wear a piece of jewelry, the more susceptible it becomes to wear and tear.

The PH levels in our skin also play a big role in how fast a piece of jewelry becomes discoloured. The fact is, we all have natural body processes, and jewelry is more prone to become discolored when the wearer has higher levels of PH on their skin.

That’s why we’re here to walk you through how to take care of your jewelry so that it shines bright as new for years on end. Remember: taking care of your jewelry is just as important as wearing it! Read on to find out how to take care of your gold-filled jewelry.

How to Take Care of Your Gold-Filled Jewelry

Gold-filled jewelry is hypoallergenic, which is ideal for those of you who have sensitive skin. Made of 5% solid gold, the gold is bonded onto a base layer, which is typically sterling silver. Gold-filled jewelry is safe to wear underwater (unless the water is chlorinated or is salt water) and is easy to clean.

Here are some tips on how to care for your gold-filled jewelry:

-Polish off your jewelry using a soft polishing cloth. This will help maintain its shine.
- Safe in the water but avoid contact with perfumes, detergents, and other skincare products.
 - Avoid exercising in your jewelry or going into chlorinated pools.
- Rinse with warm water after swiming in the ocean.

Gold-Filled With Pearl

Pearls originate from oysters. Each one is unique and can take years to form, which is why they are such a highly sought-after piece of jewelry.

Here are some tips on how to care for them:

- Do not wear your pearls in water.
- Remove them when you swim, shower, sleep, or exercise.
- Avoid contact with detergents, skincare products, and soaps - these can dull your pearls.
- Clean your pearls with a soft cotton cloth.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is made of 92.5% silver. The other 7.5% consists of other metals, typically copper. Mixing the silver with other metals makes the jewelry more durable and helps it hold its shape.

Here are some care tips:

- Avoid contact with skincare products and other detergents.
- To cleanse your sterling silver, mix water and baking soda together and wrap the jewelry and the mixture together in aluminum foil for ten minutes. Wipe away the baking soda and water mixture and rinse it with water. You can also use toothpaste in place of baking soda and water.
- Remove your jewelry when doing strenuous activities or exercise.

General Gold-Filled Jewelry Cleaning Instructions

We suggest giving your jewelry a polish or regular clean-up when the shine begins to dull.

We also suggest the following general care tips:

- Use a soft polishing cloth to regularly clean your jewelry. Other materials can potentially scratch your jewelry.
- Never leave chemical residue on your gold-filled jewelry.
- Clean your jewelry and remove dirt residue with mild soap water and a soft toothbrush.
- Store your jewelry in a pouch to avoid humidity.
- Rinse your jewelry with lukewarm water after swimming in the ocean
- Remove jewelry when exercising. Sweat can damage your jewelry.
- Take off your jewelry when swimming in salt or chlorinated water.
- Do not wash pearls or gems with strong liquid cleaners.
